How to Apply for Overseas Jobs from Punjab: The Complete Roadmap

Every year, thousands of young men and women from Punjab travel abroad for work — to Gulf countries like UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, as well as European nations like Poland, Romania, and Croatia. But many first-time applicants are unsure about the correct process. This guide walks you through every step, so you can go abroad safely and legally.

Step 1: Get Your Passport

Your passport is the most essential document for any overseas job. If you don't have one:

  • Apply online at passportindia.gov.in
  • Book an appointment at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) — Jalandhar PSK is the closest for Doaba region residents
  • Processing time: 7–15 working days for normal, 1–3 days for Tatkal
  • Ensure your passport has at least 12 months validity before applying for jobs

Step 2: Prepare Your Documents

Keep the following documents ready:

  • Passport (original + photocopies)
  • Updated CV/Resume with recent photograph
  • Educational certificates (8th, 10th, 12th, ITI, Diploma, Degree)
  • Experience certificates from previous employers
  • Trade test certificates (for skilled workers like welders, electricians, plumbers)
  • Aadhaar Card
  • Passport-size photographs (white background, multiple copies)

Step 3: Find a Licensed Recruitment Agency

This is the most critical step. Only apply through agencies that hold a valid RA (Recruiting Agent) license from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

How to verify an agency:

  1. Visit the MEA website: mea.gov.in
  2. Go to the "RA Search" section under Protector General of Emigrants
  3. Search by agency name or state
  4. Confirm their license number and validity period

Red flags of a fake agency:

  • No physical office — only a phone number or WhatsApp
  • Demands upfront payment of ₹1–5 lakhs or more
  • Promises "guaranteed visa" without an interview
  • Not registered on E-Migrate
  • Cannot provide their RA license number

Step 4: Register Your Profile

Visit the licensed agency's office and register your profile. Provide:

  • Your passport copy
  • Updated CV
  • Copies of all certificates
  • Your job preferences (country, role, salary expectations)

The agency will enter your details into their database and match your profile with incoming employer demands.

Step 5: Attend Interviews & Trade Tests

When a matching opportunity arises, the agency will call you for:

  • Client Interview — In-person or video call with the Gulf/European employer
  • Trade Test — Practical skill demonstration (for welders, electricians, fitters, etc.)
  • CV Selection — For some bulk hiring, employers select based on CV alone

Step 6: Receive Offer Letter & Complete Documentation

Once selected:

  • You receive a formal offer letter from the employer
  • The agency initiates visa and work permit processing
  • You complete your medical examination at a GAMCA-approved centre (for Gulf) or designated centre (for Europe)
  • Police clearance certificate is obtained if required

Step 7: E-Migrate Registration

All Indian workers travelling to ECR (Emigration Check Required) countries must register on the E-Migrate portal (emigrate.gov.in). Your licensed agency handles this registration. The E-Migrate system:

  • Verifies the employer and recruitment agency
  • Records your employment contract details
  • Provides emigration clearance

Step 8: Visa Stamping & Pre-Departure

  • Your visa is stamped on your passport
  • Attend a Pre-Departure Orientation Seminar (PDOS) — mandatory for first-time emigrants
  • Book your flight (often arranged by the employer or agency)
  • Depart for your new job

Timeline: How Long Does It Take?

StageDuration
Document preparation1–2 weeks
Profile matching & interview1–4 weeks
Work permit processing2–8 weeks (varies by country)
Visa processing1–4 weeks
Medical & E-Migrate1–2 weeks
Total (approx.)6–16 weeks

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Paying large sums to agents — Genuine agencies never charge candidates
  2. Going on a tourist/visit visa to work — This is illegal and can result in deportation and ban
  3. Not reading your employment contract — Understand your salary, working hours, and benefits before signing
  4. Trusting social media ads — Many fake agents advertise on Facebook and Instagram
  5. Skipping medical tests — Medical unfitness can cause last-minute visa rejection
